Every good charcuterie board starts with a great cutting board. However, with all the different materials and sizes out there, it can be tough to decide which one is right for you. Here’s a guide to help you pick the perfect cutting board to help you cut the cheese (literally).
Wood or Bamboo?
The first step is deciding whether you will need to use a wood or bamboo cutting board. Both materials have their pros and cons. Wood is more durable and heavyweight, making it ideal for heavy chopping tasks. Bamboo is lighter and easier to move around, making it better for slicing and dicing.
If you’re planning on serving a lot of meat, go with a woodcutting board. If you’re planning on serving mostly cheese and vegetables, go with bamboo.
Board Size Matters
Once you’ve decided on material, it’s time to think about size. Cutting boards come in all different shapes and sizes, so it’s important to choose one that will fit your needs. If you’re only ever going to use it for small tasks like slicing cheese or chopping herbs, a small cutting board will do the trick. But if you entertain often or plan on doing a lot of cooking, opt for a larger board. Not sure what size to get? Here’s a rule of thumb: If you can comfortably fit two fists side by side on the board, it’s big enough.
Taking Care of Your Board
No matter which cutting board you choose, be sure to take care of it. Wood and bamboo boards need to be oiled regularly to prevent them from drying out and cracking. You should also avoid putting them in the dishwasher—handwashing is best. With proper care, your cutting board will last for years to come.
Take it to the Chopping Block
Picking the perfect cutting board doesn’t have to be complicated. Just ask yourself a few simple questions: wood or bamboo? large or small? Once you’ve got those answers, all that’s left to do is choose the style that best suits your taste—and start chopping!
